Justin and I crossed off the #1 item on our list of things we wanted to do when we moved out here. On June 22nd, we boarded a Mystic Sea Tour boat and headed west to the San Juan Islands. It was right at the time of the Summer Solstice and we were told that was when Orcas were most active. Perfect! We endured 2 1/2 hrs in the freezing cold just to keep our awesome spots at the front of the boat. And boy was it worth it. :)
We first came across the Transient Pod. These guys move up and down the coast and feed on Harbor Seals.
I love this shot of all of them lined up. The big bull on the far right was just at the beginning of he breach out of water, so you don't get the massiveness of this guy, but he is 30 ft long and weighs over 30 TONS!!
As were were sitting watching the Transient Pod, the J Pod came up from the south. They are native to the Pacific Northwest and feed on fish and occasionally an Harbor Seal. The oldest member of the pod is known as "Granny" (shown in the pic below). She is 103 YEARS OLD!!!!
The J Pod rather quickly left the area we were patrolling, so we went back to watch the Transient Pod. We got there just in time to see them hunt down an Harbor Seal.
Excited about the hunt and with a full belly, this little guy did his best to breach the water. What a little cutie!
It was quite the experience, and one I will never forget. We plan to make this an annual adventure and can't wait to see them again next year.
