Zooey Update

If you hadn't heard, our little Zooey fell very sick last Thursday.  What I thought was just finicky eating in the morning turned out to be loss of appetite (she wouldn't eat or drink), vomiting and diarrhea by Thursday evening.  We had an after hours vet visit, where our vet did a couple of quick tests to rule out any serious virus/illness.  She got a shot for nausea and some molasses product that we had to feed her every 4 hours via syringe and give her water every 2 hours as well.  Needless to say, that night I did not get much sleep.

I took Zo with me to work on Friday.  She again started vomiting.  After a quick chat with our vet he said to bring her in right away for further tests.  She had blood draws, x-rays done and after 5 hour, we found out she was anemic, which was causing some of the fatigue but that was not what was making her so sick.  Our vet was baffled and started calling other colleagues for advice.  He said we simply can only treat the symptoms at this time.  So we continued with the syringe feeding and watering, kept her warm and did a lot of praying.

Friday night was another sleepless one.  I could only hold her, cry and pray.  I felt so helpless.  Finally, around 3:30 am she started to make a turn for the better.  She began drinking water on her own and seemed to have a little more energy.  Shortly after 7 that morning, our vet called to see how our little patient was doing.  Let me just say, we have the BEST vet in the WORLD!  We took Zooey in to the clinic that morning for some subcutaneous fluids.  Even though she wasn't dehydrated, our vet said it would help to ensure whatever was in her system would be flushed out.

When we arrived back home, we were overjoyed to see little Zooey starting to play with her big sister, Leela.  While we limited play time to just a few minutes, it still warmed our hearts to see and we knew that she was going to ok.

The rest of Saturday and Sunday we continued to see improvements.  She started drinking more and REALLY got her appetite back (I also had two Engagement Sessions which I will post about later). On Monday we took a stool sample in to the vet and finally found out what was making her so sick.  She has a HUGE amount of really bad parasites in her intestines.  But the good news is that it is treatable.  So she was started on medication for 10 days and we'll see if it clears up.  We have to be extra careful to ensure Leela doesn't also get those nasty little things.

Zooey is back to her self now.  She is running and playing with Leela and even getting the best of her at times.  She eats like a little piggy.  She has learned that obedience will earn her treats, which she loves!  Justin taught her how to sit yesterday.  Here's a very cute video of tricks & treat time.

All-in-all, this has been a much better week and we are all adjusting and feeling better.  We are looking forward to a nice and relaxing weekend at home.

Did she have the parasites when you got her and the seller just didn't tell you about them? >:(
